Fun With AUNT ELSIE from 1919

July 27, 1919.  An illustration by AUNT ELSIE from the story "Teeny Weeny Bears".
August 03, 1919.  The AUNT ELSIE page always had a project for kids to make.  "Here's a jolly usefulness for my little artists to make.  Everyone wants a book mark, and here are three that will make any story merrier.  Trace these on nice cardboard, leaving the marker ends as long as you wish.  Cover their faces and caps with the jolliest colors and then see them laugh at you over the top of the page."
September 07, 1919.  There is no mistaking an AUNT ELSIE paper doll.  They all have the distinctive AUNT ELSIE look.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, July 1947

July 08, 1947.  License To Operate Motor Vehicle for Yellowstone National Park.
 Old Faithful.
July 09, 1947.  I had to include the photo of the bear.
 Tower Falls.
July 09, 1947.  Here is a photo of one of the couples at Yellowstone National Park.

I was lucky enough to purchase a scrapbook at a school garage sale.  Two couples went on vacation together, leaving Houston on July 03, 1947 and traveled  through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, arriving at Banff, Canada on July 13, 1947.  They left Banff and traveled through Idaho, Washington, Utah, Arizona and arrived back in Houston on July 26, 1947.  The album is full of photos, postcards, menus and other assorted paper ephemera.  They had one terrific vacation.  I LOVE this scrapbook.

See America Cut-Outs from Junior Editors

July 25, 1955.  YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK.  There are thousands of wonderful places to see all over the United States.  One of the most exciting is Yellowstone National Park.  Yellowstone has animals, waterfalls, geysers, petrified forests, a pool of boiling clay of different colors, canyons, rivers - just about everything in nature is represented.  When Junior Editors travel through the northwestern states they'll probably visit Yellowstone.  It's the largest of our many national parks, and was the first set aside for people to visit - in 1872.  The park is 3,453 square miles, more than three times the size of Rhode Island.  It lies in three states, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.  Yellowstone is in the very heart of the Rocky Mountains.  Good roads wind all the way through the park, and there are numerous hotels and public camping places.  More than half a million people visit the park every year, and many of them camp out along the way.  The oldest large wildlife preserve in the United States is at Yellowstone.  Hunting is forbidden in the park.  The friendly animals you can meet include bears, elk, deer, antelope, buffalo, moose.  There are also many birds, fish and small animals.  Driving through Yellowstone you very likely would see a bear with her two cubs just like the ones pictured here.  To start your own collection of things to see in America, paste the picture on cardboard.  When it's dry, color the whole picture with colored crayons.  Later you can cut out the bear and her cubs along the heavy outline.  Fold back the ends on the dotted lines and there you have three bears, standing up.
July 26, 1955.  STATUE OF LIBERTY.  When Junior Editors visit New York City they will want to see the Statue of Liberty which stands on Bedloe's Island in New York harbor.  The colossal copper statue is that of a woman dressed in a loose robe.  Her right arm holds a torch high, while her left clasps a tablet bearing the date of the Declaration of Independence.  On her head rests a crown with huge spikes, like sun rays.  At her feet is a broken chain which is seldom noticed.  It is a symbol of the bonds which chain a people struggling for liberty.  More than half a million people every year travel by ferry from Manhattan Island to see the statue and climb as high as its crown.  The statue, the largest ever made, was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States.  Frederic Auguste Bartholdi designed it.  It is made of thin sheets of copper hammered over a steel framework.  The framework, resembling an oil derrick, was made by Gustave Eiffel, who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris.  Standing 151 feet high, the statue weighs a total of 450,000 pounds.  The torch rises 305 feet above the base of the pedestal.  It was presented to this country in 1884, brought here later and unveiled in 1886.  In 1921 it became a national monument.  Every foreign visitor who comes to America knows about this famous lady who lifts her lamp of liberty.  As ships come into the bay, passengers rush to the rail to greet her.  For your statue of the Statue  of Liberty paste this picture down on stiff paper.  When dry, color with crayons.  Cut out along the heavy lines and fold on the dotted lines.  Paste the blank tab under the tab farthest left, bend the two grass panels forward and the figure will stand up.

HELEN VINSON in the Movie Star Paper Doll Series

June 23, 1935.  The outstanding work of Helen Vinson in "Her Wedding Night", a United Artists picture in which she is co-starred with Anna Stern and Gary Cooper, has marked as one of the screen's most promising young artists.  Her ability and distinctive blonde beauty have won many friends and here she is shown with several of the lovely gowns and costumes worn in the production together with a sport ensemble and street dress from her personal wardrobe.  (1)  What woman wouldn't adore this lovely dressing gown of rose velvet with its quilted satin collar.  It is trimmed with gold frogs and gold fringed sash.  (2)  This simple street dress of white crepe de chine is also appropriate for sports wear.  It is neatly decorated with black satin ribbon and worn with a patent leather belt.  (3)  This hostess gown of rose crepe is almost devoid of decoration and for its modish grace relies entirely on the novel drape of the sleeves and skirt.  (4)  These lounging pajamas of heavy ripple weave crepe of peach color are worn with a lovely olive green coat.  The tie and belt are of silver cloth.  (5)  This new spring print is typical of the season's styles.  The multi-colored plaid design is especially new and attractive, typical of the clothes worn by Hollywood stars.  (6)  The sports woman will particularly like this golfing ensemble of beige knit sweater with crew neck and brown wool skirt which is worn with a mauve suede leather jacket by Helen Vinson.  Embroidered initials of the wearer are a new fad.

ANN SOTHERN in the Movie Star Paper Doll Series

June 30, 1935.  ANN SOTHERN in the Movie Star Paper Doll Series.  Ann Sothern first deserted motion pictures early in her career in favor of Broadway where she made her debut with Marilyn Miller in "Smiles" and later with Zigfelds's famous "Follies."  She then created a sensation in "Of Thee I Sing" which resulted in her being offered a starring contract with Columbia in "Let's Fall In Love."  Others of her screen successes are "Melody in Spring", "Kid Millions", "Folies Bergerre" and "Blind Date".  Her latest picture is "Eight Bells" and here she is shown in lovely gowns and costumes worn in the picture together with distinctive clothes from her personal wardrobe.  (1)  This modish jacket of black taffeta may be worn with almost any sport skirt.  The trimming is of frilled white organza.  (2)  A simple sport frock of white Kasha cloth of nautical design with touches of blue at the collar and belt.  (3)  This original coat suit of light weight woolen material is strikingly enhanced with vari-colored silk and wool trimming.  Note the muffler and gloves carry out the same decorative motif.  (4)  Dusky pink moire, in regal period lines, compliments the lovely blond beauty of Miss Sothern.  (5)  Light beige flannel, highlighted with dark brown buttons, is finely tailored in this two-piece slack suit.  (6)  A new Organza frock of shirred fullness and loose flowing sleeves tightly cuffed at the wrist, worn with a dainty frilled collar.  (7)  The beaded tunic of this dinner gown is of latest fashion for it is cut longer at the back and is slashed at the sides, circled with a sash of flame colored chiffon.

This paper doll has nice clothes but she looks nothing like Ann Sothern.  All the other dolls in this series look like the movie stars they represent.  Ann Sothern was so pretty, it's a shame the artist did not try to make the doll look at least a little like Miss Sothern.

Jean Gabin, The Man DIETRICH Loved

I went a few years ago to view Jean Renoir's "Grand Illusion", 75th Anniversary Restoration.  A terrific film.  The movie starred Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim.  Jean Gabin was the actor that Marlene Dietrich was madly in love with.  She risked life and limb to follow him during his military service in World War II.

May 12, 1935.  Paper Doll Cut-Outs of Famous Motion Picture Stars for the Children.  Latest Fashions from the Movie Capital for Particular Women.  MARLENE DIETRICH in the Movie Star Paper Doll Series.  The glamorous Marlene is easily one of the most famous and popular of all screen actresses.  Always known as one of the best dressed women of the world, her admirers will thrill at the sight of the gorgeous clothes she wears in "The Devil Is a Woman", a picture of Spanish atmosphere produced by Paramount.

Errol Flynn and OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND star in THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.

January 07, 1937.  ERROL FLYNN, the leader of "The Charge of the Light Brigade", is shown here wearing a uniform of the Crimean War.  Cut out and color picture.
January 08, 1937.  OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, ERROL FLYNN and another actor (who is he?) appear in the second picture of this coloring contest.  The Charge of the Light Brigade starred Errol Flynn, OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, Patric Knowles, Henry Stephenson, Nigel Bruce, Donald Crisp, David Niven, C. Henry Gordon, Robert Barrat, Spring Byington and J. Carrol Naish.  Thundering action based on Tennyson's poem, with immortal charge into the valley of death by British 27th Lancers cavalry.  Lavish production values accent romantic tale of Flynn and de Havilland at army post in India.  Max Steiner's first musical score for Warner Bros. is superb.  Balaklava Heights charge directed by action specialist B. Reeves Eason.  Directed by Michael Curtis.

"May I present . . . my latest discovery?" asks OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND

November 11, 1940.  Life Magazine, page 70.  A Rogers Bros. ad featuring the gorgeous OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND.  Must have been fun to be so gorgeous.
