A Big TEXAS Hug to PHIL COLLINS!

March 10, 1967.  A movie coloring contest for John Wayne's "THE ALAMO".
1975 - 1978.  A big TEXAS hug to Mr. Phil Collins.  Thank you so much for your gift to the ALAMO Museum.  The first rock concert I ever went to was January 1975 and the concert was THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY.  I was 13 years old and I had never seen anyone as strange as Peter Gabriel.  Phil Collins, with a wild mane of hair, was hidden behind the drum kit during most of the concert.  After Peter Gabriel left the band, Phil Collins took center stage.  The photo above was taken by my brother and it shows Phil Collins at the mike and Tony Banks at the keyboards.  I also saw the band several times in the 1980's.  Mr. Collins made this TEXAN very happy in the past with great times at concerts and very happy today when he gave his collection to the ALAMO museum.

Errol Flynn and OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND star in THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.

January 07, 1937.  ERROL FLYNN, the leader of "The Charge of the Light Brigade", is shown here wearing a uniform of the Crimean War.  Cut out and color picture.
January 08, 1937.  OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, ERROL FLYNN and another actor (who is he?) appear in the second picture of this coloring contest.  The Charge of the Light Brigade starred Errol Flynn, OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, Patric Knowles, Henry Stephenson, Nigel Bruce, Donald Crisp, David Niven, C. Henry Gordon, Robert Barrat, Spring Byington and J. Carrol Naish.  Thundering action based on Tennyson's poem, with immortal charge into the valley of death by British 27th Lancers cavalry.  Lavish production values accent romantic tale of Flynn and de Havilland at army post in India.  Max Steiner's first musical score for Warner Bros. is superb.  Balaklava Heights charge directed by action specialist B. Reeves Eason.  Directed by Michael Curtis.

Can You Draw TOM MIX's Face?

May 10, 1932.  "Above is an outline of Tom Mix's face and sombrero.  To the best of your ability sketch in the features which are missing and then color the completed drawing in the most realistic manner."   A newspaper contest to win tickets to see TOM MIX in "Destry Rides Again".

Color JACKIE COOGAN as Rag Patch

May 05, 1925.  "Here is the JACKIE COOGAN Rag Patch cartoon that you have been waiting for.  It is all ready for nimble fingers to decorate.  Discussions heard around the city Monday night indicated that hundreds of Lima kiddies, and many grown ups too, are planning to patch Jackie's clothing and try for the awards that have been offered by the Lima News in cooperation with the Lyric theatre.  Now here is the way to start so that the cartoon will be properly decorated.  Cut out the above cartoon and paste it on a piece of cardboard.  This makes it solid and easy to work with.  The next step is the pasting on of the cloth that is to be the background of the trousers, shirt, hat and suspenders.  This background may also be painted in color.  After preparing the background little patches in bright colors and great variety should be cut out in the shapes shown in the picture and pasted in their proper places.  After the cartoon has been carefully prepared it will represent JACKIE COOGAN  in his latest picture, THE RAG MAN, to be seen at the Lyric beginning Friday."

I guess most people remember JACKIE COOGAN from the television show The Addams Family but he was also a very popular child star in the 1920's.  In this contest, kids were suppose to use scraps of fabric to create his raggedy clothes.

THE FOX AND THE HOUND, Movie Coloring Contest

March 26, 1988.  A coloring contest for the Disney movie, THE FOX AND THE HOUND.  From Leonard Maltin's Guide Book, "1981.  Directed by Art Stevens, Ted Berman and Richard Rich.  Voices of  Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, Pearl Bailey, Jack Albertson, Sandy Duncan, Jeanette Nolan, Pat Buttram, John Fiedler, John McIntire, Paul Winchell and Corey Feldman.  Charming Disney animated feature about the childhood friendship between two natural enemies, a fox cub and a hound pup; as they grow older their relationship is put to the test by their emerging instincts.  Warm and brimming with personable characters, this one approaches the old Disney magic at times."  I like this movie.

OLIVER & Company, A Movie Coloring Contest

January 13, 1989.  A coloring contest for the Disney film, OLIVER & Company.  From Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide, "OLIVER & Company (1988), Director: George Scribner.  Voices of Joey Lawrence, Billy Joel, Cheech Marin, Richard Mulligan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Dom Deluise, Taurean Blacque, Robert Loggia, Bette Midler and Natalie Gregory.  Free adaptation of Dickens' OLIVER TWIST in the cartoon world:  homeless kitten falls in with the jaunty Dodger and his canine pals, who work for Fagin, a human nebbish in debt to the heartless Sikes.  Dodger (Joel) has  the films best song, "Why Should I Worry?" - - but an excitable Chihuahua voiced by Marin provides the biggest laughs.  Disney's grittiest (grungiest?) animated feature is no classic, but it's likeable enough."  I have never seen this movie.
